Introduction
HIV/ AIDS Youth Peer Education Programme is functioning since 2003 at Indian Red Cross Society, Pune District Branch. In this programme mainly youths are made aware of HIV/AIDS and along with that they are also taught different life skills like Goal Setting, Communication Skills, Conflict Management, Decision Making and also to solve the problems of day to day life by positive way. In this way the capacities of the youths are developed. Through YPEP the youths are made aware of the serious problem of HIV/AIDS and of the duties they are bound to, being a responsible citizen of tomorrow..
YPEP is active in schools and colleges in Pune city and Purandar Taluka surroundings. 20 Schools and 20colleges are registered under this project in the year 2006-08. Thereafter, a two days training on Life Skills and Basic HIV/AIDS Awareness is arranged for 10 selected students with the help of Programme Officers under the guidance of YPEP counsellors. Moreover the youths are motivated to take part in various competitions and activities conducted under YPEP during the year.
Along with these activities YPEP project is active in conducting the HIV/AIDS awareness programs for different element of the society by organizing activities like rally, street plays, lectures, poster exhibition etc.
Activities at a glance:
- Training of Trainers for Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Industries, School Drop Outs, National Social Services (N.S.S), Disaster Management.
- Activities like rally, street plays, lectures, poster exhibition etc.
- Organizing Competitions.
- Blood Donation Camps.
- Sessions for reducing Stigma & Discrimination against HIV/AIDS
- Care & Support towards People Living with HIV/AIDS.
Future Objectives
- Youth Peer Education Programme: to reduce risk behaviour among youth through Youth Peer Education & Life skills development.
- Care & Support: To increase the number of people living with HIV/AIDS receiving integrated prevention, care & support services.
- Stigma & Discrimination: To reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma in society and associated discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
- Red Cross Volunteer Network: To build and manage a network of Red Cross volunteers to support the Indian Red Cross HIV/AIDS programme.
